amika Amika High Tide Deep Waver

The Amika High Tide Deep Wave Hair Crimper won our spot for best safety features amongst the best hair wavers due to its ability to keep you and your hair protected during styling. This waver also takes longer than a few of the other picks on the list, particularly the Best Overall pick, to heat up, but once it reaches temperature, it delivers effortless beach waves in a flash. The resulting look is very attractive and holds up well, but I needed to use a bit of a softer hand, as the clamp creased hair more than I would have liked when I let the clamp fully close down on my strands. This could be attributed to the fact that this hair waver feels heavier all around. If you've been on Instagram at all recently, chances are you've come across one of these intimidating-looking tools. Picture three curling irons squished together, and you're most of the way to understanding the purpose of triple-barrel curling irons.

Plus, it has a pink and black color scheme that’s easy on the eyes. Also, unlike most hair wavers, the first Insert Waves Here waver I received was a lemon—it wouldn’t turn on, even after following the instructions to a T and trying multiple outlets. Though the replacement I got worked just fine, this gives me pause in regards to overall quality and longevity.

Hot Tools Professional Nano Ceramic Deep Waver

The InsertNameHere Insert Waves Here 3 Barrel Ceramic Curling Iron picked up our spot for having the most aesthetic design amongst the best hair wavers thanks to its eye-catching look. The Bondi Boost Wave Wand won our spot for producing the smoothest waves amongst the best hair wavers due to its ability to produce sleek waves. The Hot Tools Pro Artist 24K Gold 3 Barrel Hair Waver earned our Best Overall spot for its best hair wavers due to its durability, usability, and performance. If you like it hot for easier and faster styling, you need this literal hot tool. The Hot Tools Deep Waver is designed with proprietary tech that's capable of sensing a drop in temperature.

3 barrel iron hair

It’s a decent hair waver, as it ultimately delivers an attractive style without much effort, but it’s lacking in some of the more user-friendly elements. If you want to cut down your styling time, opt for the Hot Tools Deep Waver. The curling iron can wave lots of hair at once, plus the heat dialer can reach up to 430 degrees Fahrenheit. Take a small section of hair and clamp the curling iron onto it, close to the roots. The Bed Head Wave Affair 3 Barrel Digital Jumbo Hair Waver won our Best Value spot for the best hair wavers due to its great performance and affordable price. If you anticipate styling on-the-go, this mini deep waver will fit right into your purse and it heats up in just 30 seconds using even heat distribution and ceramic technology.

Style your curls

That said, I tested my hair with that temperature because this was one of the first hair wavers I tested and there wasn’t any guidance available. At this temperature, the hair waver gave me a substantial wavy look that remained in place throughout my entire 9-hour-long day. The iron alerts you when it’s fully heated, and you won’t be waiting long, as this waver heats up fast—ideal for anyone who is often in a time crunch.

3 barrel iron hair

Beyond that, the hair waver doesn’t feel nearly as durable as some of the other options we tested. The buttons are also in an area that’s easy to accidentally toggle while styling your hair. Overall, it’s worth spending more to get better functionality. The Conair Double Ceramic Triple Barrel Curl Styling Waver is among one of the best budget-friendly hair wavers we tested, but the value wasn’t quite there.

Cheaper tools may not heat evenly and may cause hot spots, leading to uneven heating and damage to your hair. Never use heating tools on wet hair, as this can cause severe damage. Make sure your hair is completely dry before using any heating tool. What’s more, the hair waver has a very outdated set of controls that don’t quite make sense. Rather than a screen, there’s a big red "on/off" switch and a dial that goes from 0 to 30 in increments of 5. Although the instructions offer some guidance on the temperature range to use based on your hair type, those numbers don’t match the increments on the dial.

A three-barrel curling iron can save you time and energy when it comes to styling your hair. The best three-barrel curling irons can heat up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit to help you sculpt your waves in minutes. They feature barrels made with ceramic, a material that evenly distributes heat and can be used on all hair types. They also have tourmaline coatings, which helps to reduce frizz and seal in moisture by counteracting the positive ions naturally present in dry or damaged hair.

So, if for some reason your curling iron begins to cool off, it'll automatically work to restore heat and keep the iron hot. If you have fine hair, it’s important to use a lower heat setting to avoid damaging your hair. On the other hand, if you have thick or coarse hair, you may need to use a higher heat setting to ensure that the curls hold.

The most expensive hair waver we tested was more than 10 times the price of the least expensive one we tried. But, price doesn’t necessarily dictate value and performance. Our tests show that the most affordable hair wavers were generally the poorest performers, but, for the most part, middle-of-the-road options were just as desirable as the most expensive hair wavers.

Component Styling microsoft fluentui Wiki

fluent design

In addition, all static classnames embedded within the tsx file inside of the css helper function calls can now move into the styles file. Basic conversion just means copying styles from scss into ts, making prop names camelCased instead of kebab-cased, and stringifying everything except for pixel values. Use space in layouts to direct the eye to areas of high importance and guide people to what they’ll need to see next. Elements in a design that are in close proximity are seen as being meaningfully related. As more space is added between elements, their perceived relationship weakens.

Alignment

Now we’re doing more and more through Medium, witter, and our new Microsoft Design site (relaunching this May) to activate and engage the design community. These four phases occur in each release cycle, and they allow us to always have a full set of work that we’re rolling into. That way, we never have to be super precious about moving forward with any single hypothesis or feature.

Migrating to Fluent UI React v9

Countless hacks have been implemented to "slightly tweak" styling of a thing in a particular context. If your rule is equally specific as an existing rule, you have a race condition; last one to register wins, resulting in hacks that only work sometimes. Styles applied using this $ selector syntax do not render out. Any logic for determining a component or element's classNames should reside in the Component.styles.ts file. This may mean getting rid of a few utility/state classNames in favor of props to add styles in conditionally.

Applying Fluent spacing

Our partner teams across Microsoft, like Office, Cloud and Enterprise (C&E) and Xbox do the same thing, so this is a collaborative and cumulative effort. At the end of the day, we’re building tools for app developers to create experiences for their customers, so we all need to be in sync. Show or hide page elements to optimize content for the window size and its orientation. This responsive technique gives users the right amount of information and optimal user experience based on how they are viewing it. For example, categories appearing on a small screen show limited meta data like an image, title, and link so more of them can be seen and help the user focus. On a larger screen, categories can show additional meta data like a persona, date, and short description and can still be seen in the view port.

It’s an attempt to optimize the process for both designers and developers through a shared foundation. At least in its initial stage, it’s as much about process as it is about pixels and interactions. It’s less about creating something new and more about establishing coherence.

Use the following guidance to decide on the best approach for your application. Remember that the ramp is flexible to accommodate your needs. It’s important to use spacers as a tool for creating consistency, rather than blindly using consistent spacers. For example, when creating lists, adjust spacers to left align text and center align icons.

Microsoft does not lack in design talent, but certainly faces the very real challenge of learning to scale and span the products and experiences as we grow. Values and ramps shared across platforms, like shadows and shared colors, are linked to each UI kit through the Fluent 2 design language. To streamline our complex system of assets and keep each file as useful as possible, each platform-specific UI kit contains styles specific to that platform. For example, the San Francisco type ramp is only in the iOS UI kit. Your experiences should adapt to the device you’re on and should build off the familiar—designing for what you already understand. For over 20 years we’ve created award-winning videos that combine design, animation, live action and visual effects for businesses of all sizes.

The idea of establishing a design system at Microsoft started a decade ago when several product teams merged and a handful of design pioneers started working together. Design principles are a set of values that express a shared vision and help guide decision making. They influence how product designers approach and solve problems. We believe our Fluent principles will guide our product experiences for years to come.

A component consists of DOM elements, or "areas." Each of the areas should be targetable for styling. Free and open-source software that allows users to set animated desktop wallpapers and screensavers powered by WinUI 3. Fluent Design is a design language developed in 2017 by Microsoft and was first used in the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. Joey Pitt, a Principle Design Lead on the Fluent team, shared his inside perspective on how the system works, how it is evolving, and how to get involved.

Layout

fluent design

Like the building blocks that compose it, the new identity embraces a “some-assembly-required” approach. Our goal is to build Fluent as a collective, both internally and externally — Fluent being the intersection of first party equals third party. Just like product design, we’re looking at our design system as a design challenge that can solve problems for our users. But the users this time are our designers, design teams, engineers, and product leaders. SCSS a build time process of expanding a high level css-like language into raw css.

Component creation and convergence

The compression helps but all of this could be avoided by using a different approach to defining our styling. If you find some fabric-core mixins are missing, consider adding them to the @fluentui/style-utilities (@uifabric/styling) if they are highly reusable. However keep in mind that the initial page load bundle size WILL be affected, so do this sparingly only for very common things. At the same time, if you’re a designer, there’s a bunch of design-oriented discourse on those same pages where we have code.

Built for focus

fluent design

Responsive design uses just one layout where the content is fluid and can adapt to changing format size. This design technique uses media queries to inspect a given device’s characteristics and renders content accordingly. Responsive design allows you to build a feature one time and expect it to work across all screen sizes. Baseline grids consist of dense horizontal rows that provide alignment and spacing guidelines for text. Aligning baselines to a specific absolute grid establishes a vertical rhythm — a pattern that’s easier for the human brain to scan. Baseline grids are especially useful with content that spans multiple columns.

Component.base.ts

Move fluidly from design to development, between apps, and across platforms. Rising to this challenge will take a lot of time and effort, and we all have day jobs in specific products. Over time it can bring our culture, our business, our technology, and our experiences together. We’re taking a few pages from our engineering partners’ playbooks and looking for ways to work more openly and collaboratively. Shared tools and communication are an important part of that.

Within components, smaller spacers are used to ensure a strong implied relationship between each element while also guaranteeing they are perceivable and distinct. After installing the Fluent UI Android library, import it to access Fluent components. After installing the Fluent UI Apple library, import it to access Fluent components. To install Fluent UI Apple using CocoaPods, specify Fluent UI in your Podfile. With this shared system, we become more open by design, more intentional about cross-team collaboration, more efficient — doing more with less — together.

Fluent 2 boasts sweeping changes across-the-board to ensure frictionless communication throughout the system. We improved on the solid foundations from Fluent 1 and injected innovative additions. All to empower makers at every angle of the system to drive toward a single purpose. One Microsoft across the products we offer, the services we provide, and the communities we make. Fluent becomes the best version of itself when there is clarity around what it is, what it could be, and why that’s important. Today, we aspire to make Fluent a collective, open design system that connects us, inspiring and influencing everything we create.

As a 10-year design veteran at the company, I’m excited to share my perspective on how we got here and where we’re heading. Enable the Fluent 2 UI kits from the Libraries dialog in the Assets panel.

Design at scale

To ensure the UI kits are always available in your drafts, automatically enable them in Account settings. Your experiences should consider, learn, and reflect a range of perspectives and abilities for the benefit of all. Less visual clutter and noise keeps people centered, calm, and confident.

Follow these instructions to build and output an AAR file from the FluentUI modules, import the module(s) to your project, and add it as a dependency. If you're having trouble generating an AAR file for the module, make sure you select it and run e.g "Make Module 'fluentui_drawer'" from the Build menu. To manually install Fluent UI Android into an existing Xcode project, download the latest changes from the Fluent UI Android repository. Modularized FluentUI manual installation involves building individual AAR files of required modules. With each release of Fluent UI Android, we align more components to the Fluent 2 design language.

For example, the BottomSheet component is in the fluentui_drawer module. To use the BottomSheet without taking a dependency on other modules, add the fluentui_drawer module to build.gradle. Fluent’s cohesive design language is carried through each platform-specific Fluent UI library to ensure you can build the same great experiences across one platform or across them all. Fluent and its design identity are meant to convey a specific moment in time. Fluent isn’t a product — the experiences we make and evolve to empower our users are the product.

To get the building blocks for crafting Windows experiences, use WinUI. These components incorporate Fluent’s design language, so you can be confident you’re building great experiences within the Fluent ecosystem. Modular grids have both vertical columns and horizontal rows which intersect and create a matrix of cells, or modules. These modules provide additional layout guidelines as single units or as larger blocks when combined. Starting at version 0.0.12, applications cal use individual modules as needed.

S60 competitors are a varied lot that includes the Alfa Romeo Giulia, Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Lexus IS and Mercedes-Benz C300. The 2019 Volvo S60 is an all-new vehicle based on the company’s SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) chassis that already underpins the XC90 SUV and S90 sedan. Double A-arm front suspension is now used in place of MacPherson struts, and the multilink rear suspension features a transverse composite leaf spring. Otherwise, the only other negative note from the brief time I had in the cars was some of the harder, simpler plastics used on the center cupholder area on the lower Momentum trims. Beyond my slight frustrations with the Polestar Engineered version and its arcade joystick selector, my only other notes on what stood out as non-ideal came from the infotainment system. The system was updated to respond quicker than on past Volvos, and it is responsive.

Model

I want all the connecting points of the car—and my passengers—all stressing when I slam it. Then there’s the special Polestar Engineered option on the T8, which boosts power on the hybrid model even higher to 416 HP and 494 lb-ft of torque. Volvo says it’s also capable of an estimated 21 miles on electric power alone. There’s a lot of technology happening to make this little 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine produce 316 hp and 296 pound-feet of torque, not the least of which is both a turbocharger and supercharger operating simultaneously. The supercharger does its work at lower RPMs, while the turbocharger takes over at speed to boost power higher in the rev range. They combine beautifully to create a linear power curve that belies the complexities involved to make it all happen.

Following a short front overhang with an upright grille, muscular wheel arches house aluminum alloy wheels. A deep scallop runs above the rocker panels, rising toward the rear of the vehicle. Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has crash tested the new S60 yet, but being a Volvo, it’s a safe bet this sedan will pass with flying colors. With a starting price of only $35,800, the S60, a North American Car of the Year finalist, is a remarkably good deal. Only the Infiniti Q50 ($35,550) and the Acura TLX ($33,000) start lower, and they’re not in the same league as the S60 in terms of style and refinement. The S60’s true competitors – the German trio comprised of the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class – are all the more expensive. In a way, Volvo saved the best for last, but the new S60, especially in the brand’s R-Design configuration, is only this good because of the four vehicles that went through this transformative process before it. Only through them are the S60’s superlative qualities honed to near perfection.

The Polestar also gets a bespoke gear selector from the rest of the S60 fleet, and it’s not great. Instead of a traditional PRND selector, it’s one of those things that’s more like a joystick, which returns to center after each motion. You have to push it twice to put it in reverse, twice again to get into drive, with a separate button for park. There are steering wheel paddles for shifting, but no locked “manual” selection on the selector, so the car goes back to calling the shots too soon after you make a shift. The S60 T6 AWD R-Design offers a killer combination of everyday drivability and fun-to-drive character (even if it isn't as hot as the S60 can get). The car features multiple drive modes that top out in aggressiveness with Dynamic mode, but even the default Comfort mode is sharper and more engaging to drive than your standard compact luxury sedan.

The upgraded suspension carries the car’s extra weight perfectly through a good road, with the help of the strong gold-painted brakes, to. It also has gold seatbelts, which sort of makes the S60's otherwise refined and quiet interior feel like a pop up night club in a bank. This S60 T6 AWD R-Design test car also comes with a couple optional upgrades to further improve safety, starting with full LED headlights that actively bend around corners and feature automatic high beams.

Volvos have always focused on safety and comfort first, and now they're building on that with fun.

2019 volvo s60 t6 r design

This T6 model’s engine impressively produces over 300 horsepower while at the same time achieving over 30 miles per gallon on the highway. The Environmental Protection Agency officially rates the S60 T6 AWD R-Design at 21 mpg in the city, 32 on the highway, and 25 combined, and my week spent driving it in all manner of ways supports those numbers. As you might expect on account of it being a Volvo, the S60 is about as safe a car to drive as they come.

Volvo S60 T6 AWD R-Design Test Drive And Review: Elegant Fun

So many of the challenges in the physics of an SUV are eliminated when the bulk of the car is lower. The star of the show is the nine-inch Sensus Connect touchscreen, flanked by HVAC outlets. A single row of toggles run beneath the touchscreen, anchored with a knob at center. The center console is similarly clean and uncluttered, with a gear selector lever, gnurled drive-mode control wheel, and a tambour-covered pair of cupholders. If you’ve selected the premium Bowers & Wilkens sound system, you’re treated to an eyeball tweeter at the top center of the dash and shiny aluminum speaker grilles on the doors (not to mention amazing sound quality).

Volvo S60 Safety

It’s nice, it’s comfortable, it does things differently than your average BMW or Audi, but it also doesn’t really stand out in a major way. But the 2019 Volvo S60 is all-new, and now it aims to be more of a true sport sedan than ever. There’s a design rationale that supports the engineering decision to fix the distance between the front axle and the dashboard. Car designers frequently cite this dimension as a key determiner in the elegance of a car’s profile. S60 is thus imbued with a sophisticated profile, as the proportions of the rest of vehicle fall into line.

The electric G-Class arrives with more power than even the AMG G63 and no sacrifice to its off-roading ability. I was the one who got followed by the CHP for a bit, so I wasn’t exactly tearing rubber with the full might of the Polestar’s potential torque and power. This is the one that was briefly available as a subscription on the rough-starting Care By Volvo program before all 20 cars were snapped up in less than an hour. Volvo was keen to tell me that there will be more available soon enough, maybe even to own.

If you’re looking for a midsize European sedan offering sublime comfort, good style, abundant safety hardware and sporty driving manners, the U.S.-built Volvo S60 delivers on all counts. Yet, with this S60 tuned to be sportier than average, it still feels like a proper luxury car in that noises from the outside, the tires, and the engine are still well muted and bumpy roads don’t get far past the suspension to your bum. If you’re seeking a proper sports sedan, then perhaps these measures are unwanted, but for those wanting an even balance, the S60 T6 AWD R-Design teeters perfectly between these two poles. The 2019 Volvo S60 is one of the best sedans the company has ever built, and one of the best four-door options on the road today. Gone are the days of the S60 mostly being known for good seats—it’s become the total package.

City Safety provides braking and steering support, adding to the driver’s input when necessary to help avoid an accident. As part of the Advance package, my S60 came with Pilot Assist, Volvo’s “hands-on-the-wheel, eyes-on-the-road” driver assistance system. This system provides steering, distance and speed control in a variety of situations, which can make a long drive much less stressful and fatiguing. The T6 engine makes great power with minimal turbo lag, and no torque steer is felt through the S60’s steering wheel during brisk acceleration. The 8-speed automatic, from Aisin-Warner, shifts smoothly and unobtrusively, and highway cruising in this new Volvo is both comfortable and relaxed.

While the Polestar Engineered has a ton of power, it's the R-Design that delivers the sports sedan.

For reference, the 2019 Volvo S60 originally had a starting sticker price of $36,795, with the range-topping S60 T8 Polestar Engineered Inscription Sedan 4D starting at $56,395. Interior

With its low hood and short rear deck, the 2019 Volvo S60 looks like a modern sedan shaped in the wind tunnel, but it’s a handsome design that’s still very much a Volvo. Notable details include attractive sculpting on the hood and sides of the car, along with T-shaped LED “Thor’s Hammer” front driving lights. In back, dual chromed exhausts are on duty beneath LED taillights that emphasize the width of the new S60. If there’s any doubt this car is a Volvo, a big badge in the middle of the diagonally bisected grille leaves no doubt. Also, in a neat trick, Volvo stylists have made it look as if the grille floats inside the S60’s front opening.

Engine & Transmission

Cobus has never been able to keep his car opinions to himself and at age 12, he expressed them in no uncertain terms to a certain motoring magazine’s editor. THE T8 HYBRID POWERTRAINWhen you order the T8 powertrain, you get a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine with 313 horsepower, along with a rear-mounted electric motor that has 87 horsepower. That makes for an especially quick S60, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) that’s as fast as it is efficient. The T6 received a 302-hp version of the 2.0L with both super- and turbocharging. The R-Design at first retained its 325-hp turbo-six, but both five- and six-cylinder powertrains were soon dropped.

Second Generation S60 Production Years:

But to access most of the car’s adjustments is a little overwhelming at first. You’ll have to do some math to compare that to covering the lease, insurance, taxes and maintenance on anything else you’re considering, but it’s promisingly competitive. It’s basically Apple Care and the iPhone upgrade program all in one, but, you know, a car. Something you can drive, not something that makes you irrationally mad at somebody in a blue shirt. I even think the smaller proportions makes the design language edge out the S90.

The now-familiar four-tile layout still works like a dream, with familiar tablet gestures (pinch and pull, swipe, etc.) working just like they should. Bluetooth hands-free and audio streaming are standard, as are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (both of which require a USB connection). The S60 Inscription, also with the 250-horsepower 2.0-liter, builds on that with bright chrome window trim and driftwood inlays, together with 4-zone climate control and power front seats that offer lumbar support and power-cushion extensions.

First Generation S60 Production Years:

Sedans may be out of fashion right now, but I’m here to sing their praises – in particular, I’m here to praise the 2019 Volvo S60 T6 AWD R-Design that I drove for a week recently. While crossover SUVs are all the rage for their carrying capacity, taller stance and off-road pretensions, sedans win when it comes to elegance, lower center of gravity, and ability to conceal and secure cargo. Compared to the XC60, S60’s midsize equivalent in the Volvo lineup, the S60 T6 AWD delivers objectively superior fuel economy (21 mpg city/32 mpg highway/25 mpg combined for S60 vs. 21 mpg city/27 mpg highway/23 mpg combined for XC60) and subjectively better handling. This tester is the T6 AWD R-Design model, which starts at $46,400 and features the S60’s second-most powerful engine – a trick 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that’s both turbocharged and supercharged to produce 316 horsepower.

From a design standpoint, these screens integrate perfectly, avoiding the tacked-on look of some competitors. Beyond the three powertrains, the S60 also gets the Momentum, R-Design and Inscription trim levels. The Momentum is the lower trim level available on the T5 and T6 models. These come with 18-inch wheels, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, eight-inch touchscreen, and a panoramic sunroof standard. Every S60 comes with City Safety, a suite of driver assistance features that includes collision avoidance and mitigation with other vehicles, with cyclists, with pedestrians and with large animals.

T8 Polestar Engineered Inscription Sedan 4D

Best of all is the optional set of 19-inch R-Design wheels that sets the perfect tone for this car’s mission. If you want to adjust the heads-up display, for example, you swipe to the right on the main screen, where you’re ambushed by rows and rows of icons for just about every function on the car. This is how most of the adjustments are made (happily not stuff like wiper speed, as on a Tesla Model 3). That includes the safety alerts, engine start-stop, rear-headrest remote folding, and cruise control settings. All cars come with automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, and cross-traffic alert and braking, drive-mode selection, road-sign information in Volvo’s new digital driver display standard, and the Pilot Assist semi-autonomous system standard.

The M440i and 430i now benefit from mild-hybrid technology, improving engine response and efficiency. It’s also just as solid on the road and in the bends as the Polestar was, and I’m confident I could have pushed it a lot harder than possible on most of the roads we drove on. It’s a Volvo that wants to have fun, even if the squeezing seatbelt has the potential to rupture a bladder if you even think about getting a little bit of air. Ultimately the Polestar left me wanting more, though I’d like to drive one again, with fewer cops around next time.

The vertical central screen is huge with crisp graphics and a powerful-enough processor to keep pace with inputs, while the flat menu structure of three screens that you swipe left or right to access is ingenious. Impressively, this screen and the Sensus infotainment with navigation is standard on all S60s. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard on every S60 as well, as does a hands-free trunk, keyless entry, a parking assist system for both parallel and perpendicular spots, and an air filtration system. As mentioned, the even larger 12.3-inch driver’s display that houses the digital gauges and gives redundant access to main parts of the Sensus infotainment system is equally impressive, though it’s not available on the base T5 FWD Inscription model. When the first of the Volvo S60 generations burst onto the scene in 2000, it was only the second Volvo to follow the Swedish automaker’s new corporate design language previewed by the 1992 ECC concept car and launched as the 1998 S80 large sedan.
